Cleaning and Disinfecting:

It’s an Investment - Not a Cost

"Many people mistakenly think that if a cleaning, sanitizing or disinfecting product is sold to the public it has been reviewed and proven safe by government agencies," says a 2013 EPA publication geared toward early childcare and education facilities. The EPA requires products labeled as sanitizers or disinfectants to kill the germs that the product claims to kill, but the registration review does not evaluate all possible health risks for users of the products. Some chemicals affect air quality and can cause or trigger health problems, such as asthma. In a study conducted in California, four out of five people diagnosed with work-related asthma did not work directly with disinfectants.” View Source

Read The SDS Before You Use a Disinfectant or Sanitizer

Review the SDS, and ask yourself this question: Is this a product that will make a positive impact to sustainability? If not, then you need to re-think its use. Become part of the solution not the problem!

Be Proactive - Not Reactive. Learning about the potential health problems of cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting products only means one thing: these hazardous chemical disinfectants and sanitizers have been creating health issues for a long time and have gone undetected. Some of these chemicals affect air quality and can cause or trigger health problems, such as asthma.

Did you know? EnviroNize®Anolyte is rated as a “0” Health Hazard Rating meaning “NO HEALTH HAZARD” (see SDS below). Considered a key consideration in the choosing and deployment of a disinfectant in your establishment.

Choosing Sustainable Disinfectants and Cleaners

vs Chemical Non-sustainable Disinfectants

For us to maintain our existence on this planet, we need to look to sustainability in a very responsible and aggressive way. Sustainability is a process and development to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Harmful chemicals directly impact our most valued natural resource - water.

Know Your Chemical Signs

(Pictograms Noted in the SDS)

Pictograms are graphic images that immediately show the user when the product is hazardous and what type of hazard is present. With a quick glance, you can see, for example, that the product is flammable, or if it might be a health hazard.

Alternative disinfectants should be considered when any of the pictograms noted below are listed in the disinfectant’s SDS, as they reflect a hazardous warning about the disinfectant’s use.

HAZARDOUS PICTOGRAMS

Know Your NFPA and HIMIS Ratings

(Noted in the SDS)

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Hazardous Materials Identification System (HIMIS) is a rating system which categorizes a chemical from 0 (no hazard) to 4 (high hazard). Four areas are categorized based on health, flammability, and physical hazards, as well as personal protection. They consist of four color-coded fields: blue, red, yellow, and white.

Greener Alternatives

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is the world's oldest disinfectant and yet it is more common than you may think. Did you know that it is in your body right now? HOCl (Hypochlorous acid) is a naturally occurring substance that white blood cells produce to help fight off infections. While it is strong enough to destroy dangerous organisms, HOCI is gentle enough to not harm other cells. As a result, it makes for the perfect sanitizing and disinfecting solution in all environments.
